PM Fayyad fears reconstruction mechanism will widen split
European leaders and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon have offered to set up an interim international committee that would fund and organise aid directed towards reconstruction of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad states that this mechanism is problematic as it assumes separation between Gaza and the West Bank will continue. A senior Western diplomat states that the mechanism is intende to help Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to return to Gaza and reassert his control there.
