Arab capitals ponder Palestinian electoral issue
Except Hamas and Jihad, all the Palestinian factions that have visited Cairo in relation with the recent meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo have recommended the formation of a technocratic government, which constitutes a means of removing Hamas from power in Gaza. Saleh Al-Naami in Al-Ahram Weekly presents the debate. Hamas expects the Arab League to follow Fatah’s position that if an agreement is not reached on holding early elections, legislative and presidential elections will have to be held at the same time, implying an automatic extension of President Mahmoud Abbas’s term until January 2010.
